CAF Champions League: Enyimba Beat Etoile du Sahel With Penalties

The reigning Nigeria League champions, Enyimba FC, have qualified for the group stage of the CAF Champions League despite being beat during regulation time. The build-up to Wednesday’s clash at the Olympic Stadium in Sousse was quite tense as the Tunisians were quite antagonistic towards Enyimba who however remained stanch in their mission to end their five-year wait to make it this far in the Champions League.

Goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai stopped three penalties as two-time champions Enyimba International Football Club of Aba eliminated Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia to qualify for the group stage of the 2016 CAF Champions League. Etoile had beaten the Nigerian champions three nil in a match played last night at the Olympic Stadium in Sousse to level the tie 3-3 on aggregate. In a dramatic shootout, Enyimba failed to convert their first two penalties with Etoile du Sahel scoring theirs before Afelokhai pulled off a string of stops to keep the Nigerians in the match before midfielder Peter Onyekachi fired in the winner in sudden death to give Enyimba a 4-3 win on penalties.

Speaking after the match, an elated Afelokhai revealed that his supreme confidence in his abilities was key. Also speaking after the match, Peter Onyekachi who scored the winning penalty said he was full of confidence that his penalty would be the ultimate decider in the encounter. Enyimba will now join Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Zamalek, Zesco United of Zambia, Entente Setif of Algeria, AS Vita of the Democratic Republic of Congo, ASEC Mimosas of Cote d'Ivoire and Wydad Casablanca of Morocco in the draws of the group stage of the CAF Champions League.
