ECOWAS Court Voids Sack Of Ex-Sierra Leone Vp, Samuel Sam-Sumana

The Court of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), ‎sitting in Abuja has declared as illegal the sack of Sierra Leone Vice President, Samuel Sumana by the country's president, Ernest Bai Koroma. In a judgment delivered by a three-man panel, the court ordered Sierra Leone government to pay the former vice president all his entitlements from when he was sacked to the period when his tenure will end.

The former Vice President of Sierra Leone, Samuel Sam-Sumana, who was allegedly sacked by the country's president, Ernest Bai Koroma, had approached the ECOWAS court of justice in Nigeria, where he filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit seeking for his reinstatement. He argued through his lawyers that after his alleged  illegal  expulsion from the Sierra Leone's ruling  party, the All Peoples Party that he was not given a fair hearing by the country 's supreme court.

Reacting to the court verdict, Counsel to the Ex-VP, Barr. Raymond Atuguba said that the Sierra Leone government violated his applicant's rights as it awarded cost against the government. The former vice president who was accompanied to the court by few of his family members expressed joy on the court's verdict. Our Correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that the ECOWAS court refused to grant some of the relief sought by the applicant on the grounds that it does not have jurisdiction on the relief.
