FG Launches National Campaign Against Fake News

The Federal Government has launched a National campaign against fake news in a bid to curb the rising trend of misinformation and hate speech which is negatively affecting the nation. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed speaking at a Press Conference in Abuja described fake news as a ticking time bomb waiting to explode if not curtailed.

Alhaji Lai noted that the wide spread of fake news is responsible for aggravating the various crisis in the country especially the farmers/herdsmen crisis. He said the campaign will include active collaboration with social media, traditional media and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to sensitize Nigerians on the effect of fake news on Nigeria’s democracy and its corporate existence as a nation. He said the campaign will however not involve the use of coercion or witch-hunting, as he urged the media to lead the campaign against fake news and called for cooperation of all citizens to curb this global issue.
