Leave Brass LNG alone, Bayelsa Women Protests

Aggrieved youths and women from communities  in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have protested against the planned withdrawal of the Federal Government’s 40 per cent stake and relocation of the proposed Liquefied Natural Gas project from the area.

The protesters, drawn from the various communities on the Brass Island, who converged on Twon Brass, were armed with placards some of which read,  “FG Leave Brass LNG alone in Bayelsa,” “ Buhari: Listen to the Niger Delta, Brass LNG is our own,” “ Brass LNG, solution to Niger Delta problems,” “The youths deserve better, leave Brass LNG,” among others.

According to them, the relocation of the project could plunge the area into another era of violent crime and militancy. Youth leader of Twon Brass, Ebigon Sebo, described the planned relocation of the Brass LNG as inciting. He said: “The Brass LNG might leave any moment. They have sacked their workers in furtherance of the plan. It is now that the Federal Government wants to use joblessness to provoke Niger Delta people. If the LNG is pulled out, the youths of the state and the region may resort to criminality.

However, the Brass Local Government Chairman, Mr Bello Bina, who addressed the protesters, promised to pass their complaints to the state governor, Mr Dickson, for onward transmission to President Buhari. The chairman also expressed concern  over the planned relocation of the Brass LNG.
