Reps To Summon Former President Jonathan Over Malabu Oil Deal

The House of Representatives has resolved to probe former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, over his role in the controversial $1.3 billion Malabu Oil and Gas deal.

The Chairman of the House ad-hoc committee on oil and gas, Hon. Razak Atunwa on wednesday, disclosed that his committee decided to invite former President Jonathan to testify on his role in the award of Oil Prospecting Licence, OPL 245, to Malabu Oil and Gas Ltd in pursuant to constitutional provisions and fair play.

He avowed that the committee resolved to close in on the Former President was based on the fact that at the time key ministers of his cabinet struck the deal, he was at the helm of affairs of the country.

Atunwa however hinted that the Former president may not be compelled to appear before the committee in person if he provides necessary information on his role in the deal to the committee.

FCT Correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that it would be recalled that a Russian middleman who brokered the deal, Ednan Agaev had told Italian prosecutors that Jonathan allegedly received a $200 million bribe from former petroleum minister, Dan Etete.

However, former president Jonathan described reports linking him to the oil scandal as the handiwork of his detractors, who are threatened by his rising profile at home and in the international arena.
