Senate in Rowdy Session Over Social Intervention Fund

It was a rowdy session on the floor of the Senate over disbursement of the Federal Government Social Intervention Fund. Trouble started when Senate Minority leader, Biodun Olujimi moved a motion drawing the attention of the senate to the alleged wrongful use of the Social Intervention Fund as introduced by the Buhari-led government.

The plenary turned rowdy when the Senate Majority leader, Ahmed Lawan sought permission to speak to dismiss the allegation. Senator Dino Melaye and Bassey Akpan, therefore cited sections of the Senate rules to back their insistence on not allowing Lawan comment on Senator Olujimi’s motion before it has been seconded by another lawmaker.

After heated arguments between the APC and PDP lawmakers, the Senate Leader eventually had the floor following the intervention of the Senate President. Upon deliberation on the controversial motion, the Senate resolved to set up an ad-hoc committee to investigate the allegations contained in it.

Our Correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that the Senate also after additional prayers by Senator Barau Jibrin of Kano North, resolved to also probe the SURE-P Programme during the Goodluck Jonathan administration.
