Ride-hailing drivers on the platforms of Uber, Bolt, InDrive, and Lagride in Lagos have commenced a three-day strike over what they described as poor working conditions and unsustainable fares offered by ride-hailing platforms.

The Lagos State chapter of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) announced the industrial action on Sunday during a press briefing in Lagos.

Public Relations Officer of the union, Steven Iwindoye, said the decision followed prolonged complaints from drivers over economic pressures affecting app-based transport workers across the state.

Iwindoye explained that drivers are grappling with increasing fuel prices, higher vehicle maintenance costs, inflation, and rising living expenses.

He said the fare structures and policies of ride-hailing companies have not been adjusted to reflect these economic realities.

The union said the strike is aimed at pressing for urgent reforms in the app-based transport sector.

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), have said they may be forced to embark on a nationwide strike, over what they described as dissatisfaction with the way their demands are being handled by the states and federal government.

A statement signed by the president of AS, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, said the decision was reached after a meeting of its national executive council, as so far, no meaningful efforts by governments have been made to address their demands in the last ten years.

Some of the demands he listed include, the sanctity of legally constituted Governing Councils, review of the 2009 federal government and ASUU agreement, revitalisation fund for public universities, payment of all earned academic allowances, including withheld salaries, and promotion arrears.

Osodeke, however, added that the union will reconvene after two weeks, beginning on Saturday, to review the situation and take decisive action to address the issues.

The Federal Government is however appealing to the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) to call off their seven-day warning strike.

The Minister of State, Labour, and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, is calling on them to shelve the strike, having expressed her displeasure over the action of the unions, which she described as a total disregard for the Federal Government’s concerted effort to address their concern.

The minister stated that the Ministry was not officially notified by the unions of their intention to proceed on a seven-day warning strike, a development the minister said is contrary to the provisions of section 18 of the Trade Dispute Act.

Doctors in Kenya have started a week-long strike over delays by the government to deploy medical interns. They are also complaining about the poor working conditions they say they have to work under.

The Labour Court had earlier issued an order to halt the industrial action to make room for negotiations between the labour minister, the doctors’ union and employers today to find a solution.

But the union says it did not get the court order.

Kenya is facing a huge public health crisis.

With doctors in state medical facilities on strike, patients who need help will suffer.

The Nigerian Army has taken responsibility for Sunday’s AIR STRIKE which killed many villagers and left several others injured at Tudun Biri village in Kaduna State. The Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, had confirmed the development at the end of an emergency security meeting held yesterday.

It was earlier reported that while the villagers were marking the Maulud celebration to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad, an “unmanned aerial Drone” bombed some parts of the community, killing a yet to be ascertained number of individuals. Following the incident, the Kaduna state government convened an emergency security meeting which was yesterday chaired by the Deputy Governor, Dr Hadiza Balarabe.

The meeting which had in attendance, Heads of security agencies, religious and traditional leaders as well as representatives of the community, had recounted core details regarding the incident. Addressing journalists afterwards, Samuel Aruwan, had however explained that the bombing on the villagers was un-intended and unfortunate.

The Commissioner further explained that the troops of the Nigerian Army were on a “routine mission against terrorists” in the area and accidentally, the operation affected members of
the community.

The Nigerian Medical Association, Lagos State chapter, has directed all the
doctors working in the three government hospitals on the Lagos Island, to begin an
indefinite strike over the death of its colleague, Dr Vwaere Diaso.
The association said Diaso died on Tuesday at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos,
after she was trapped in a collapsed elevator for more than 40 minutes, before she
was rescued, and even so – there was no blood available to resuscitate her.
In a press statement signed by its state Chairman, Dr Benjamin Olowo-jebutu, and
Secretary, Ismail Ajibowo, the association, however, demanded an immediate and
unbiased investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The NMA also declared a five-day mourning period in the state and urged doctors in
the other government-owned hospitals to scale down activities as a mark of respect
for the dead colleague.
The hospitals to embark on the indefinite strike are the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos;
Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, Lagos, and the Massey Street Children’s Hospital,
Lagos.
