A prison riot in Mozambique’s capital Maputo left 33 people dead and 15 injured.
Mozambican police chief, Bernardino Rafael, said the inmates snatched weapons from prison warders and started freeing other detainees.
The unrest comes after the Mozambique’s Constitutional Council confirmed the ruling Frelimo party as winner of the Oct. 9 elections.
While Rafael blamed protests outside the prison for encouraging the riot, Justice Minister Helena Kida argued that the unrest was started inside the prison and had nothing to do with protests outside.
About 1,534 people escaped from the prison in the incident but 150 have now been recaptured, with prison break attempts recorded at two other prisons.
