Deputy Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Lami Danladi-Ogenyi, has alleged the existence of an illegal detention cell in Ezza, Ado LGA, reportedly run by political loyalists under the watch of council chairman Sunday Oche.
Addressing journalists in Makurdi, she described the situation as a threat to residents and revealed that petitions have been sent to the Inspector General of Police and the DSS. Danladi-Ogenyi also raised a motion in the House, prompting the formation of an ad hoc committee to investigate the matter.
She called for the suspension of the chairman and his deputy during the probe, recommended that all payments be routed through the council’s official bank account, and urged the re-arrest of suspects allegedly released on the chairman’s orders.
In response, Chairman Oche denied the existence of any illegal cell, confirmed receiving petitions, and stated that investigations by Zone 4 police had led to the arrest and subsequent release of some chiefs. He also acknowledged the Assembly’s inquiry but claimed he was cleared of any wrongdoing.
