Angola has honoured Nigeria’s late Head of State, General Murtala Muhammed, for his pivotal role in the country’s independence from Portuguese colonial rule.
The posthumous award was presented during Angola’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebration in Luanda, alongside recognitions for former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Professor Ibrahim Gambari.
Angola’s President and officials praised Nigeria’s bold support in the 1970s when it became the first African nation to recognise the MPLA government amid global opposition.
They recalled Murtala Muhammed’s $17 million financial aid and firm stance against foreign oil companies that resisted Angola’s independence.
The tribute highlighted Nigeria’s historic leadership as a moral and political voice for Africa’s liberation and solidarity.
