US President Joe Biden has awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to 19 people across politics, culture and the arts, including former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, designer Ralph Lauren, U2 frontman Bono and philanthropist George Soros.
According to a White House statement, the medal is presented to people “who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.
Two prominent American political figures were posthumously honored: former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and former Michigan Gov. George Romney, the father of former Senator Mitt Romney.
In entertainment, actors Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington were honored, along with retired NBA player Earvin “Magic” Johnson.
One honoree not in attendance was football superstar Lionel Messi, who the White House said had “scheduling conflicts” that prevented him from physically attending the ceremony, but still received his award.
