A Lagos State High Court at Tafawa Balewa Square has sentenced BRT driver Andrew Ominikoron to death by hanging for the rape and murder of 22-year-old fashion designer Bamise Ayanwola.
Justice Sherifat Sonaike delivered the judgment on Friday, bringing closure to a case that drew nationwide outrage. Ominikoron, 47, was initially arraigned by the Lagos State Government in March 2022 on a four-count charge, including rape, conspiracy, sexual assault, and murder.
The incident occurred on February 26, 2022, around 7 p.m., near the Lekki-Ajah Conservation Expressway. According to the prosecution, Ominikoron conspired with unidentified individuals to sexually assault and subsequently kill Bamise. Despite pleading not guilty, the court found him culpable.
During the trial, Ominikoron admitted under cross-examination that he unlawfully picked up the victim at Chevron bus stop during his return trip to Oshodi, after dropping off passengers along the Oshodi-Ajah BRT route.
