Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has expressed that Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, is welcome to once again seek the party’s presidential nomination for the 2027 election—regardless of whether he returns as his running mate.
Baba-Ahmed made this known during an appearance on The Morning Brief, a programme aired by Channels Television, on Wednesday.
“I hold both individuals in high regard, especially Peter Obi. He is more than welcome to pursue the Labour Party’s ticket again,” he said.
“The party remains open to him contesting in 2027, with or without me as his running mate. Additionally, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has every right to support a southern candidate if it chooses to,” he added.
The former lawmaker emphasized the need for competent and compassionate leadership in Nigeria—leaders who can fulfill promises and drive progress.
“Nigeria needs capable leaders—those who show compassion, who can move the country forward. We are tired of leaders who make promises but deliver failure,” he said.
When asked whether Peter Obi’s involvement in coalition discussions spearheaded by the ADC could be seen as undermining the Labour Party, Baba-Ahmed dismissed such concerns, stating that it does not amount to anti-party conduct.
