Several worshippers are feared dead and many more hurt following a crush at one of the world’s biggest religious festivals in northern India known as Kumbh Mela festival.
There has been no official confirmation of how many people may have been injured or killed at the bathing day at the Kumbh Mela festival although witnesses describe the scenes of “absolute chaos” at the river bank, with clothes, shoes, blankets and backpacks strewn on the ground as crowds tried to escape.
The accident is believed to have happened when people who were sleeping by the riverbanks in Prayagraj were trampled on by other pilgrims who had taken a dip in the holy waters.
But, despite the famous bathing ritual being suspended by organisers, “tens of thousands are still trying to take the holy dip”.
