The death toll from the cholera outbreak in Nigeria has claimed 53 lives as of yesterday, June 24.
Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Jide Idris, gave this at a press briefing, saying that the 53 deaths stem from 1,528 suspected cases across 107 Local Government Areas in 31 states.
In a related development, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has explained that the high death rate of 29 persons in Lagos, was due to patients being presented late at the hospital or brought in dead.
Giving an update on the situation yesterday during a multiagency news briefing, Prof. Abayomi warned the public to avoid unregulated and unregistered beverages, as history taken from the no fewer than 579 suspected cholera cases in the state, showed that some of the patients indicated consuming some street beverages including sachet water, bottled water, carbonated drinks.
