A dramatic scene unfolded at the Akure Customary Court this week as Mrs. Folakemi Adebayo accused her ex-husband, Emmanuel Oyebanji, and the lawyer who handled their divorce of betrayal.
Folakemi, emotional and in tears, stormed the courtroom, alleging that Emmanuel secretly married the lawyer, whom she claimed had posed as a neutral party during their divorce. According to Hope Newspaper, she accused the lawyer of manipulating the settlement process in her favor due to a secret relationship with Emmanuel that allegedly began while the case was ongoing.
“She ruined my settlement! I trusted her, not knowing she was involved with my husband,” Folakemi cried, asking the court to revisit the case and investigate the lawyer for professional misconduct.
Emmanuel denied the claims, saying Folakemi abandoned their home less than a year into the marriage and cut off contact. He admitted to a later relationship with the lawyer but insisted it began after the divorce was finalized, with no prior misconduct.
The lawyer, present in court, also denied any inappropriate relationship during the legal proceedings, maintaining that her conduct was entirely professional.
After hearing both sides, Judge Ireti Sunday ruled that the court could not act on suspicion alone without concrete evidence. The case was dismissed.
