Mrs. Maria Oligbi-Edeko, Deputy Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly, has resigned her position, citing the minority status of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Assembly. Oligbi-Edeko, elected Deputy Speaker on June 16, 2023, explained that her resignation was made in the interest of justice, fairness, and equity for all constituencies.
Lawmakers praised her dedication, integrity, and significant contributions to the Assembly during her tenure. Mr. Osamwonyi Atu (APC-Orhionmwon East) was unanimously elected as the new Deputy Speaker.
Following her resignation, the Majority Leader, Jonathan Aigbokhan (APC-Esan West), proposed that Oligbi-Edeko receive all the entitlements due to the Deputy Speaker, a motion supported by lawmakers across party lines.
