Erin Patterson, 50, has been found guilty of murdering three relatives and attempting to kill a fourth by serving a meal containing death cap mushrooms at a 2023 family lunch in Leongatha, Victoria.
Her former in-laws Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Gail’s sister Heather Wilkinson, 66, died after eating Beef Wellington prepared by Erin. Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, 68, survived but was hospitalized for weeks.
Evidence included traces of the deadly toxin in the food, a discarded dehydrator with Patterson’s fingerprints, and inconsistencies in her account of the meal. She initially denied owning the dehydrator and claimed she was only mildly ill from overeating.
Patterson pleaded not guilty but admitted the dish may have contained toxic mushrooms. Police and investigators were praised for their work, and authorities expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
