Starting October 12, 2025, the European Union will begin phasing in its new Entry/Exit System (EES), mandating fingerprint and facial scans for non-EU travelers entering participating countries such as France, Spain, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland. The system will be fully operational by April 10, 2026.
Replacing traditional passport stamps, the EES will digitally track entries and exits for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. It aims to streamline border checks, reduce wait times, and improve border security through automated self-service kiosks and pre-arrival data submission.
Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting. Biometric and personal data will be stored for up to three years but not shared with third parties.
Originally set for 2024, the launch was postponed to 2025. The EU says the system will also deter overstays and identity fraud, potentially leading to fines, visa bans, or deportation for violations.
