The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has expanded its ongoing investigation into alleged exploitative airfare practices by some domestic airlines, following growing public concerns over sharp increases in ticket prices on select routes.
In a statement issued today (Friday) by its Director, Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, the Commission said the widened probe focuses on pricing templates and possible violations of relevant laws by operators, particularly on routes in the South-East and South-South, where consumers have reported what appears to be coordinated fare manipulation as the festive season approaches.
The FCCPC noted that it has received numerous complaints in recent days from passengers who believe airlines may be engaging in exploitative or collusive pricing.
Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the Commission, Mr. Tunji Bello, stressed that the FCCPC is empowered by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018 to prevent consumer exploitation.
Bello added that the Commission will intervene decisively where evidence suggests that consumer welfare or market competitiveness is being undermined.
