In a bid to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system and reduce escalating costs of pharmaceutical products and drugs in the country, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved Medipool, a group purchasing organisation, as supplier of essential healthcare products across Nigeria.Â
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr Ali Pate, who announced this after FEC meeting yesterday, said the Medipool project would be executed through the federal government’s basic healthcare provision fund, and also eventually through federal tertiary hospitals, to negotiate lower prices and then channel those commodities to the areas of need.
In a related development, FEC also approved a N2.3 billion contract for the procurement and installation of a cardiac catheterization machine at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) in Sokoto, to diagnose and treat serious cardiovascular conditions, including heart related issues.
