The Federal Government has commenced vocational training to empower inmates in Nigeria’s 241 correctional facilities and prepare them for life after incarceration.
Senior Special Adviser to the President on Technical, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Education, Abiola Arogundade, who disclosed this yesterday, noted that only 500 inmates from each facility will be considered after the official take-off of the pilot scheme in Kuje Centre, which currently has a capacity of 723 inmates.
Arogundade, who said President Tinubu is concerned about the reintegration of the inmates into society, added that each beneficiary will get a grant of N500,000 once they complete the skills acquisition programme.
While stressing that the targets are those who have few months left on their sentences, she disclosed that the programme was modeled after a similar scheme being run successfully in Norwegian prisons.
