Femi Kuti is back with new music! His latest album, Journey Through Life, is set for release on April 25, 2025. The album is preceded by his new single, “After 24 Years,” which was written and recorded in November 2023. The song offers a critique of corruption, incompetence, and self-serving attitudes in Nigerian politics.
Femi explains, “‘After 24 Years’ reflects on the past two decades of leadership in Nigeria, from 1999 to 2023. My song ‘Sorry Sorry,’ released in 1998 on Shoki Shoki, highlighted the troubling similarities between our politicians and military rulers. After Nigeria entered its new democratic era in 1999, I stand by what I said in that song: our politicians have governed as poorly as the military did.”
This track echoes similar concerns raised in “Sorry Sorry,” which was released before the democratic period discussed in “After 24 Years.”
The song was written and recorded in late 2023, but Femi notes, “Although it’s almost two years later, the track is being released now because not much has changed. It’s important to preserve the original date of both the recording and the lyrics to reflect my mindset at the time. Future albums will continue to address the political, social, and global issues that reflect my thoughts from 2023 to the time of my next release.”
