Federal Government has flagged off the distribution of 42,000 life jackets to 12 states across the country to enhance safe water transportation, as part of the 2025 Safety and Enlightenment Campaign.
At the campaign launch in Minna yesterday, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, said the initiative is to promote the use of life jackets aimed at reducing boat mishaps and promoting safety across country.
Oyetola attributed the rising incidence of boat mishaps to human error, mechanical failures, adverse weather, and poor safety equipment, adding that inland waterway boat mishaps was a complex factor that required urgent action.
The minister noted that 3,500 life jackets would be given to each of the 12 states, and urged state governments, community leaders, boat operators, and the commuting public to support the deployment, utilisation, and strict enforcement of safety gears.
