The Federal Government has launched a N110 billion Tertiary Education Trust Fund project to rehabilitate medical schools in 18 universities across Nigeria.
Each of the beneficiary institutions will receive approximately N4 billion to rehabilitate infrastructure, including lecture theaters, laboratories, and student hostels.
The project aims to expand the country’s capacity to train medical professionals, including doctors, dentists, pharmacists, and nurses, and help address Nigeria’s deficit of 300,000 doctors and improve the country’s healthcare system.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, also announced the discontinuation of the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) scholarship programme, which he described as an inefficient use of public resources, noting that many of the courses pursued abroad under the scheme were readily available in Nigerian universities.
