The Federal Government has intervened in the brewing industrial dispute between the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers and the Dangote Refinery, urging the union to shelve its planned nationwide strike slated for today, Monday.
Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, announced on Sunday that he had called all parties involved to a conciliation meeting in Abuja. The government’s intervention seeks to address tensions over alleged anti-union policies at the Dangote Refinery.
Dingyadi urged the union to call off its strike and appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress to withdraw its solidarity “red alert.”
Warning of massive economic losses and hardships, the minister emphasized the importance of the petroleum sector to Nigeria’s economy and promised the dispute will be resolved amicably.
The dispute centres around the Dangote Group’s policy that allegedly restrains its employees from associating unions in the industry.
