France has announced it will summon the US ambassador to Paris, Charles Kushner, following his recent remarks accusing the French government of failing to address a rise in antisemitism.
Kushner, who is Jewish and related by marriage to former President Donald Trump’s family, expressed his concerns in an open letter to French President Emmanuel Macron published in the Wall Street Journal. He highlighted a surge in antisemitic incidents since the Gaza war began, calling for a stronger response from France.
The French Foreign Ministry dismissed the accusations as “unacceptable” and emphasized that under international diplomatic rules, ambassadors must not interfere in their host country’s internal affairs.
Kushner’s letter mirrors similar criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who recently accused Macron of fueling antisemitism by supporting Palestinian statehood.
France is expected to officially recognize Palestine next month.
