There was panic in Ibadan, Oyo State, as loud explosion rocked the ancient city around 8:00pm, with buildings collapsing due to terrific vibration.
The Oyo State Government also confirmed what it described as “an uncommon explosion” which residents speculate that houses and cars far from the scene were impacted by the blast wave.
The number of casualties could not be confirmed as of press time but it was gathered that victims have been rushed to hospitals while some residents are trapped in the rubble of buildings that caved in due to the impact of the blast.
The State’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, acknowledged that there were various interpretations of the incident, but stated categorically that the State Government, with security service chiefs, including those of the paramilitary, are in full control to mitigate the incident.
The Commissioner said Governor Seyi Makinde has implored citizens to calm down and be rest assured that their interests are being looked after.
