The House of Representatives has tasked its Committees on Public Assets and Procurement with investigating serious corruption allegations involving the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). These include illegal sales of national assets and the mismanagement of public funds.
The directive follows a motion of urgent public importance moved by Abia lawmaker Ibe Osunwa and three others during Thursday’s plenary.
Osunwa emphasized the Police Force’s constitutional duty to protect lives and property, noting that recent allegations of abuse of office and corruption threaten its credibility and operational efficiency.
The House expressed alarm over a ₦6 billion contract reportedly split into 66 parts by the NPF Procurement Department to avoid the Public Procurement Act, especially regarding uniform procurement through Crown Natures Nigeria Ltd.
Lawmakers also decried the unauthorized sale of major police barracks in Abuja, Lagos, and Kano to individuals linked with Exima Realty Company Ltd., allegedly bypassing approval from key regulatory bodies, including the ICRC and the Federal Executive Council.
Further concerns include reports that tens of billions of naira in 2024 budget contracts were awarded without due process—lacking approvals from the Ministerial Tenders Board, FEC, and the Bureau of Public Procurement. Companies implicated include Dexterity Development Ltd., KC Construction Ltd., and others.
Additionally, the House flagged a ₦2.9 billion diversion under the Safe School Initiative contract awarded to Vigiscope Ltd., which reportedly failed to meet ICT procurement standards.
Osunwa highlighted allegations that over ₦50 billion was disbursed to unverified contractors for equipment and arms procurement, with no delivery or execution. Companies named include PSGL Nigeria Ltd., SOLYD Nigeria Ltd., and several others.
The House warned that continued impunity could undermine public trust and endanger national security. The committees are to report back within six weeks for further legislative action.
