The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced dates for a series of crucial electoral activities, including bye-elections, court-ordered re-run polls, and the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), as part of preparations for upcoming polls across the country.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this during the second quarterly consultative meeting with leaders of political parties held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, said the Commission has fixed Saturday, 16th August 2025, for bye-elections in 16 constituencies across 12 states, involving over 3.5 million registered voters.
He explained that the elections would cover two Senatorial Districts, five Federal Constituencies, and nine State Constituencies, following the declaration of vacancies due to deaths, resignations, or other reasons.
Speaking on voter registration, Prof. Yakubu announced that the CVR will resume in Anambra State from 8th to 17th July 2025, ahead of the November 8 governorship election in the state. Registration will take place in all 326 wards from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm daily, including weekends.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of IPAC, Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, used the occasion to call for urgent steps to rebuild public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system.
Dantalle also advocated for the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve electoral processes, suggesting that INEC leverage AI for voter engagement, risk management, and overall election integrity. He hinted that political parties may adopt similar technology for membership registration and voter mobilisation.
