The Lagos State House of Assembly has dismissed reports on some section of the media stating that it ordered the Police to arrest protesters and teargas them as inaccurate distorted and unverified aimed at misleading the public.
In a statement by the chairman, House committee on Information and strategy, Hon. Stephen Ogundipe noted that Contrary to insinuations that lawmakers watched or ignored the situation were totally false.
He explained that the Lagos State House of Assembly was officially on recess at the time of the incident, Notwithstanding received the protesters with some Honourable members of the assembly at the complex gate who engaged them in good faith, noting that the actions of the legislatures demonstrate democratic engagement and openess.
Explaining further, Hon. Ogundipe said the legislatures informed the protesters to be peaceful in their engagement and have their documents forwarded which will be escalated to the appropriate quarters, However, the protesters flatly rejected dialogue at the gate and insisted on gaining access into the Assembly complex, in clear violation of established security protocols governing legislative premises.
The House Chairman on information argued that the engagement became abusive and violent during the engagement with the protesters when an individual individual identified himself as Taiwo Hassan (alias Hassan Soweto) became openly confrontational and verbally abusive.
He directed uncouth, defamatory, and inflammatory language at Honourable Members present while the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh was also accused by the leader of the protesters in an unprintable manner to stir up breakdown of law and order.
As the crowd became increasingly unruly and attempts wto force entry into the Assembly premises, security operatives acted strictly within their constitutional responsibility to secure lives, property, and critical government infrastructure and at no point did the Lagos State House of Assembly Order the deployment of teargas and the use of live ammunition of protesters.
The decision for Honourable Members to withdraw from the gate was taken on the advice of the Commissioner of Police to prevent physical confrontation and escalation.
