The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has directed the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge in Lagos, following its earlier closure for maintenance and rehabilitation.
The repair work caused severe traffic congestion, especially in areas like Victoria Island and Ikoyi, with motorists facing long delays. Alternative routes, such as Lekki and Falomo, were also heavily affected, compounding the chaos.
In a statement by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs Olukorede Kesha, the Minister expressed regret for the inconvenience and assured the public that palliative works were underway to ensure that the bridge would be motorable.
