The role of Kobbie Mainoo at Manchester United is in doubt after manager Ruben Amorim confirmed the 20-year-old is battling Bruno Fernandes for a place in the midfield.
The England international has yet to play this season, missing United’s loss to Arsenal and the 1-1 draw with Fulham. At Craven Cottage, Mainoo was again left out as Amorim opted for other midfield options in pursuit of a win after Fulham equalized.
Amorim shifted Mason Mount from striker to midfield before subbing him for Manuel Ugarte, then introduced defenders Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven late in the game. Despite Bruno Fernandes missing a first-half penalty, his place in the lineup remains secure. For now, a League Cup clash with Grimsby appears to be Mainoo’s best shot at minutes.
“He’s competing with Bruno now,” said Amorim. “I made two midfield changes, and I prefer Mount there when we’re pushing for a goal. Later, we needed a holding midfielder again. At Manchester United, everyone has to fight for their place—even against the captain.”
