A 31-year-old man was taken into custody on Sunday after attempting to reroute a domestic flight in Mexico to the United States, authorities reported.
The Airbus A320 had departed Leon, Guanajuato, at 7:17 a.m., heading to Tijuana. About 45 minutes into the flight, it was forced to make an emergency landing in Guadalajara after the man assaulted a flight attendant and tried to access the cockpit, according to the Secretariat of Security and Civilian Protection.
The crew managed to restrain him, and the flight diverted to Guadalajara for safety. The suspect, reportedly traveling with family, claimed a relative had been kidnapped and that he had been threatened with harm if he continued to Tijuana, stated airline Volaris.
Details about the number of passengers aboard were not disclosed. After the man’s arrest, the plane resumed its journey to Tijuana.
Guanajuato, the flight’s origin, is one of Mexico’s states most affected by cartel-related violence, including crimes like extortion and kidnapping.
