The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) clarified that the case of Comfort Emmanson, who allegedly assaulted Ibom Air crew, differs from that of musician KWAM 1.
NCAA spokesperson Mike Achimugu, during an X Space session, said the agency did not instruct Ibom Air to ban or prosecute Emmanson; the airline acted independently based on available evidence. He emphasized that airlines have the right to protect staff from abuse and take necessary actions, including bans.
Achimugu noted that while the case is under investigation, airlines can act on preliminary findings. He highlighted that past incidents lacked sufficient evidence, preventing regulatory action, as in a previous Air Peace case.
He also pointed out that unlike ValueJet, which didn’t press charges against KWAM 1, Ibom Air took legal steps, leading NCAA to petition authorities in the KWAM 1 case. He reiterated that airlines are within their rights to ban or prosecute passengers and such matters can still be resolved amicably.
