The CIES Football Observatory has listed four Nigerian players—Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen, Calvin Bassey, and Alex Iwobi—among the 300 most influential footballers globally for the 2024/25 season.
Lookman ranked 48th worldwide and 10th among attacking midfielders, following a prolific season at Atalanta. With 15 goals, five assists, and a Europa League final hat-trick, the African Footballer of the Year led his club to historic European glory. His flair and stats have sparked interest from top Premier League clubs.
Victor Osimhen secured 159th place with an index score of 81. On loan at Galatasaray, he broke Turkish scoring records with 37 goals. His elite finishing score (86) reflects his role as a top-tier striker, even though other metrics like distribution remain lower.
Calvin Bassey came in at 257th, highlighting his resurgence at Fulham. With 35 appearances and strong stats in aerial duels and passing, he has become a defensive leader at the club. His performances have reportedly attracted attention from Barcelona.
Alex Iwobi, Fulham’s midfield engine, earned a standout ranking of 37th overall and 12th among wingers with an index score of 87.4—the highest among Nigerians. His contributions on both ends of the pitch and goals with both feet helped Fulham secure key wins against top teams.
The CIES ranking assesses players from 60 leagues using performance data in aerial play, ground defence, distribution, take-ons, chance creation, and finishing. Mohamed Salah topped the list, followed by Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and Pedri.
