NiMet Predicts Nationwide Thunderstorms and Rainfall from Wednesday to Friday
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across various regions of the country from Wednesday through Friday.
In its weather outlook released on Tuesday in Abuja, NiMet said early morning thunderstorms are expected on Wednesday in parts of Taraba, Kaduna, and Adamawa states in the North. Later in the day, rain and thunderstorms are likely to affect areas including Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Sokoto, Gombe, and Bauchi.
In the North-Central region, morning thunderstorms are forecast for Benue, Kwara, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Nasarawa. These areas are also expected to experience further rainfall and thunderstorms later in the day, along with Kogi and Plateau states.
Southern Nigeria will see cloudy skies in the morning, with light rain expected in Ondo, Ekiti, and Edo. By afternoon and evening, isolated thunderstorms are anticipated across most of the South, including Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Oyo, Ogun, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Rivers states.
On Thursday, the northern states of Kaduna, Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa, and Taraba are likely to experience morning thunderstorms, with further rainfall expected later in Taraba, Kano, Gombe, and Bauchi.
In the North-Central zone, partly cloudy conditions with intervals of sunshine will dominate, but morning storms may hit parts of Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, and the FCT. Afternoon showers are expected to extend to Kwara, Kogi, and Plateau.
The southern region may see morning rain in Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, followed by widespread isolated thunderstorms later in the day.
On Friday, morning thunderstorms are expected in Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, and Taraba, while afternoon rainstorms are predicted in Kano, Kaduna, and Bauchi.
Cloudy skies will persist in the North-Central, with thunderstorms possible in FCT, Nasarawa, Kwara, and Niger. Parts of Benue and Kogi may also be affected by evening storms.
The South will remain mostly cloudy with morning rain expected in Oyo, Enugu, Imo, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, followed by scattered thunderstorms later in the day.
NiMet warned that strong winds could precede the rain in storm-affected areas and advised the public to secure loose items, avoid driving in heavy rain, and disconnect electrical appliances during storms. Residents should also avoid sheltering under trees due to falling branches.
Airline operators are urged to obtain detailed, airport-specific forecasts from NiMet for safe flight planning.
The agency encouraged Nigerians to stay updated through its official website: www.nimet.gov.ng.
