The Federal Government has instructed all vice-chancellors of federal universities to strictly enforce the “no work, no pay” policy against members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) currently participating in the nationwide strike.
In a circular signed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, universities have been directed to conduct daily roll calls, monitor attendance, and withhold salaries of staff who are not fulfilling their official duties during the industrial action.
According to the Ministry of Education, this directive aligns with existing Labour Law provisions. The National Universities Commission (NUC) has been tasked with compiling and submitting a detailed compliance report within seven days.
ASUU began a nationwide warning strike on Sunday, citing several unresolved issues including the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, payment of withheld salaries and arrears, increased funding for university revitalisation, and an end to what it described as persistent victimisation of its members.
