Stanley Nwabali has apologized to Nigerians after the Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup hopes ended in a 4–3 penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo. The match finished 1–1 after extra time, and although Nwabali saved two penalties, misses from Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Semi Ajayi sealed Nigeria’s exit.
DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba converted the decisive kick to push his team into the intercontinental playoffs.
In a post-match message, Nwabali said he understands fans’ disappointment, noting that the team “gave everything for the badge,” but their “best wasn’t enough.” He added that the squad takes full responsibility for the loss.
