31st Anniversary for D'Angelo's Brown Sugar

The Classic song and album title “Brown Sugar” by great Neo Soul artist and multi instrumentalist, D’Angelo, was released on the 3rd of July 1995. The album was recorded during 1994 and 1995 in sessions at Battery, and RPM Studios in New York City, and at the Pookie Lab in Sacremento. D’Angelo primarily handled the production, instrumentation, arrangements, and songwriting. He used both vintage recording equipment and modern electronic devices.

Brown Sugar combines the sounds of blues, gospel, jazz. In an interview done in 1995, he stated the legendary Prince has a major influence on his approach to recording the album, saying “I was one of those guys who read the album credits and I realized that Prince was a true artist. He wrote, produced, and performed, and that’s the way I wanted to do it. The Classic Album would go on to debut at number 6 on the US Bill Board top R&B Albums Chart, selling 300,000 copies in its first two months, and going on to be pivotal in positioning Neo Soul as a worthy genre relevant in present day.
