In a historic and controversial decision on Sunday, Britain, Canada, and Australia officially recognized Palestine as a state, seeking to promote peace through a two-state solution amid continuing conflict in Gaza. This move shifts these long-standing allies of Israel onto the side of roughly 140 countries worldwide that support Palestinian statehood.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the ongoing Israeli bombardment in Gaza as a humanitarian disaster and urged revival of peace talks.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has however, sharply criticized the recognition, vowing that a Palestinian state will not be established west of the Jordan River and accusing the nations of rewarding terrorism following last year’s Hamas attacks.
The decision sets the stage for more countries, such as France, to announce similar recognition at the upcoming UN General Assembly.
