State chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), along with former governors, lawmakers, and key Southern stakeholders, have rejected a zoning meeting held in Lagos on August 21, calling it illegitimate and unrepresentative.
In a joint statement signed by PDP chairmen from Imo, Abia, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers States—alongside National Assembly members and other leaders—the group dismissed all “resolutions, communiqués, or outcomes” from the meeting, stating they do not reflect the collective will of PDP members in Southern Nigeria.
They condemned the event, labeled the “PDP Southern Zoning Consultative Summit,” as being convened without proper consultation or inclusivity. According to the statement, the meeting was called “Nicodemously” by the Zoning Committee’s Administrative Secretary at the request of its Chairman, Senator Duoye Diri, and held at Legend Hotel, Ikeja.
The leaders criticized the exclusion of several Southern state chairmen, national officers, lawmakers, and former governors, calling it a “brazen disregard” for party structures and a threat to internal democracy.
They described the Lagos meeting as “premature” and designed to serve the “selfish ambition of a select few.” Signatories, including House Minority Leader Hon. O.K. Chinda, Senators Mao Ohuabunwa, George Sekibo, Mike Ama Nnachi, and former National Secretary Rt. Hon. Onwe S. Onwe, urged the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Committee (NEC) to reject the outcome.
They warned that any attempt to validate the meeting would be met with resistance under the party’s constitution.
