Putin Claims West Pushed for Nuclear Conflict, Insists Restraint

Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that Western nations are attempting to provoke him into resorting to nuclear weapons amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The remarks came in a new documentary marking Putin’s 25 years in power, as reported by Russian state media. “They tried to provoke us into making mistakes,” Putin said, referencing perceived Western actions during the conflict. Despite the pressure, he stated that the use of nuclear weapons was unnecessary and expressed hope it would remain that way.

Putin emphasized that Russia possesses sufficient military capabilities to meet its strategic objectives without resorting to nuclear arms. Since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Kremlin has repeatedly issued nuclear threats, aimed both at Ukraine and its Western allies.

At one point in late 2022, U.S. intelligence believed Moscow might be preparing to deploy a nuclear weapon, prompting a strong diplomatic warning from Washington.

More recently, a missile strike carried out by Russia on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro in November 2024 — involving a new medium-range weapon — has also been interpreted as a potential nuclear threat.
