The House of Representatives Committee on the Petroleum Downstream sector has rejected calls for the removal of Mr. Farouk Ahmed, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Committee Chairman, Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere, said the panel reviewed the performance of the NMDPRA under Ahmed’s leadership and found notable achievements that justified dismissing the petitions.
Ugochinyere reaffirmed the committee’s dedication to promoting sustainable economic growth through impartial and effective oversight.
He also raised concerns over reported plans by the federal government to sell off some of the country’s refineries, despite significant public funds having been spent on their rehabilitation. He pledged that the committee would conduct a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure transparency and accountability.
The lawmaker said the committee would probe the reasons behind the continued delays in completing turnaround maintenance at the refineries and would take necessary steps to address issues in the sector.
In addition, Ugochinyere noted that modular refinery operators have voiced frustrations over difficulties in accessing crude oil for their operations. He assured stakeholders that the committee is committed to removing these obstacles and creating a supportive legislative framework for stable and sustainable energy development.
He also announced plans to introduce an annual Downstream Petroleum Week—an initiative aimed at fostering regular engagement between lawmakers and industry players to chart the sector’s path forward.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the NMDPRA is responsible for overseeing and regulating petroleum operations within Nigeria’s midstream and downstream sectors.
