The Nigerian Senate has unanimously passed a vote of confidence in Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Thursday’s plenary session. The motion was introduced by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and supported by Deputy Minority Leader Olalere Oyewumi.
This development follows recent remarks made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in New York, where she alleged her suspension was due to raising concerns about sexual harassment involving Akpabio. She has since filed contempt proceedings against Akpabio and others over her six-month suspension without pay.
In response, the Senate urged the public to remain focused and avoid being swayed by the allegations, noting that the issue is now in court. Invoking Order 40 of its standing rules, the Senate maintained that it cannot deliberate on matters undergoing judicial review.
