The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Major General Waheedi Shaibu as the new Chief of Army Staff, instructing him to assume office immediately. His confirmation came shortly after General Olufemi Oluyede was cleared as Chief of Defence Staff, marking the start of the vetting process for President Bola Tinubu’s newly appointed service chiefs.
The session, held at the National Assembly in Abuja under tight security, included both closed and open-door vetting. Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized the importance of ensuring only competent and patriotic officers lead the nation’s security.
Senator Isah Jubrin of Kogi East praised Shaibu’s character and competence, noting his 30-year familiarity with the officer and describing him as humble and capable of tackling Nigeria’s security challenges.
The confirmations reflect the Senate’s commitment to fast-tracking the approval of all service chiefs as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security leadership.
