Spain are Champions of the 2026 FIFA WORLD CUP. They secured their second star since 2010, by defeating previous Champions- Argentina. The European champions-Spain beat South American Champions Argentina 1-0 in a blockbuster Final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, New York.
Early in the tournament, Spain slipped under the radar with little attention as worthy contenders, following an unexpected 0-0 draw with Cape VERDE. But they gradually built momentum as the tournament progressed, morphing into a formidable team, then going on to beat previous World Cup Finalist- France, who looked to be the best team.
In the blockbuster final, it took Spanish Substitute Ferran Torres to break the deadlock at the 106th minute of extra time. The heroic effort by Ferran Torres, was the sole goal of the match and handed the La Roja their second World Cup title, 16 years after their maiden triumph in South Africa 2010.
Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano MartĂnez produced a series of outstanding saves to keep his side in the contest, but a downward turnaround would occur in stoppage time of the second half when midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Pau CubarsĂ. With Argentina reduced to 10 men, Spain dominated possession in extra time and finally found the breakthrough when Nico Williams brilliantly knocked the ball into Torres’ path, allowing the forward to fire home the winning goal.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 proved to be a Classic event, with fans relishing the experience. For the first time, there was a Halftime show with music stars like Madonna, Cold Play, Shakira, Nigerian Superstar Burna Boy amongst others. Awards where also given for exceptional performances by team and individuals.
Golden Ball: Midfielder Rodri was named the player of the tournament.
Golden Glove: Unai SimĂłn won the award for best goalkeeper.
Best Young Player: Pau CubarsĂ of Spain.
Golden Boot/ Top Goalscorer: France’s Kylian Mbappé claimed the award with 10
