The Supreme Court has officially confirmed Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, rejecting Asue Ighodalo’s appeal by a unanimous five-justice panel led by Justice Mohammed Garba.
The court found no reason to overturn earlier rulings from both the Court of Appeal and the Edo State Election Tribunal, all of which upheld Okpebholo’s victory.
Ighodalo, representing the PDP, failed to present convincing proof of alleged vote-rigging, over‑voting, or significant breaches of the Electoral Act—particularly lacking credible BVAS testimony and witnesses.
INEC had declared Okpebholo (APC) winner of the September 21, 2024 election, with 291,667 votes, ahead of Ighodalo’s 247,274 and Labour Party’s 22,763.
Since then, Ighodalo escalated his challenge from the tribunal to the Appeal Court and finally to the Supreme Court. Each judicial body dismissed his petitions as lacking sufficient evidence—especially the election tribunal, which singled out the absence of valid witness testimony and the improper handling of BVAS machines.
With this final verdict, the legal contest is officially over. Okpebholo retains his mandate as governor, solidifying his victory through multiple court approvals.
