Bishop T.D. Jakes has formally passed leadership of The Potter’s House megachurch in Dallas to his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Touré Roberts, ushering in a new era for the globally recognized ministry.
The announcement, made during a Sunday service and livestreamed to viewers around the world, marked a historic moment for the church as Bishop Jakes transitions from senior leadership after nearly 50 years in ministry. While stepping back from day-to-day responsibilities, he emphasized that he is not retiring from preaching or spiritual guidance.
“This is not a farewell, but a fresh beginning,” Jakes told the congregation. “I will continue to preach and serve, but it’s time to expand the vision, not hold it back.”
Jakes revealed that the decision was shaped in part by a heart attack he experienced last November. Reflecting on that health scare, he said he wanted to ensure the church’s future was secure, rather than risk leading it without a clear succession plan. “Too many leaders hold on so long they harm what they’ve built,” he said. “I won’t let that happen here.”
Sarah and Touré Roberts, who already lead ONE | A Potter’s House Church, have been handling key operational duties since November. With their official appointment, they take full leadership of The Potter’s House, continuing the church’s nearly 30-year legacy with a fresh generational vision.
Bishop Jakes will now focus on broader ministry projects and community initiatives, while remaining a spiritual figure in the church’s ongoing journey.
