The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, says President Bola Tinubu is laying the foundation for medical industrialisation in Nigeria through bold investments in world-class healthcare infrastructure, particularly in cancer treatment.
Idris stated this during the commissioning of newly constructed Clinical Oncology Cancer Centres located at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina; the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu; and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Edo State.
He described the three oncology centres as part of a broader initiative to expand access to affordable and quality cancer care, noting that with the availability of such facilities, Nigerians no longer need to travel abroad for treatment — unless by personal choice.
The Minister of Health and Social Development, Professor Ali Pate, in his remarks, highlighted Nigeria’s cancer burden, with approximately 127,000 new cases and 80,000 deaths recorded annually. He noted that although the cancer project had remained unexecuted for years, President Tinubu’s intervention led to its actualisation, effectively doubling Nigeria’s cancer treatment footprint almost overnight.
